The lifespan of a septic float switch depends heavily on the material and environment. Stainless steel float balls (304ss or 316ss) significantly outlast plastic alternatives due to their resistance to corrosion, chemical exposure, and mechanical stress. Properly pressure-tested stainless steel floats can reliably perform for many years in continuous wastewater service.

A float switch detects and controls liquid levels within tanks, sumps, and treatment vessels. It triggers pumps, alarms, or valves when liquid rises or falls to a preset level. In water and wastewater treatment, float switches are critical for automating pump activation, preventing overflows, and maintaining safe operating levels in treatment tanks.

To check a sewage pump float switch, manually lift the float to simulate a rising liquid level and verify the pump activates. Inspect the float for damage, corrosion, or waterlogging that could affect buoyancy. Check the tether length and mounting position. Stainless steel floats are easier to inspect and clean than plastic alternatives due to their robust, non-porous construction.

304 stainless steel is the most common choice for wastewater float switches due to its corrosion resistance and durability. For harsher chemical or saline environments, 316 stainless steel is recommended. Both grades outperform plastic floats in longevity and resistance to the aggressive media found in wastewater treatment tanks and sump systems.

Custom sizes in both round and oblong shapes are available to match exact tank dimensions and system mounting requirements.

Round float balls are available from 1-1/2" up to 14" in diameter. Oblong floats range from 2x6" to 9x14" with various NPT and thread configurations. Custom sizes beyond standard inventory can also be manufactured. Multiple finishes — matte, brushed, and polished — are available to suit sanitary or industrial application requirements.
