Float & Thermostatic Steam Traps

A steam float trap operates by detecting the density difference between steam and condensate. As condensate collects, the buoyant float ball rises, mechanically opening the discharge valve. Once condensate is expelled, the float drops and closes the valve, blocking steam loss. This automatic cycle maintains system pressure and heat transfer efficiency without manual intervention.

Inside a float steam trap, the float ball is positioned below the steam space and above the condensate outlet. At rest with minimal condensate, the float sits low, keeping the valve closed. As condensate rises, the float lifts with it, opening the discharge port. The float's vertical travel directly controls valve opening and closing.

Steam trap float balls are most commonly manufactured from 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel. Grade 316ss offers superior corrosion resistance and is preferred for aggressive process environments. Both grades are available in matte, brushed, or fully polished finishes, and can be pressure-tested to meet specific system requirements.

Yes. Custom float balls can be manufactured with specific thread sizes, NPT or UNC fittings, magnet integration for level detection, and through-tube compatibility. Round and oblong shapes are available in sizes from 1-1/2" to 14", with custom dimensions also accommodated. Pressure testing to exact specifications is included upon request.

Round float balls are available in 1-1/2", 2", 3", 3-1/2", 4", 5", 6", 7", 8", 10", 12", and 14" diameters. Oblong floats range from 2x6" up to 9x14" with various NPT and UNC thread configurations. Custom sizes beyond standard inventory can also be manufactured to meet specific steam trap design requirements.

Float balls are pressure-tested using dedicated equipment capable of replicating the operating conditions of the intended steam trap system. Testing is performed to customer-supplied specifications, verifying structural integrity and leak-free sealing at the weld seam. This ensures reliable performance in high-pressure industrial steam environments where failure could cause significant system downtime.
